Kitchens built for a different decade

A house from that period is a good starting point. Walls are plumb, openings are true, and cabinetry fits without extensive scribing, which keeps more of the budget in the cabinets and less in the labor to make them fit.

What does not work is the layout. A kitchen closed off from the rest of the ground floor, a run of counter broken up by a doorway nobody uses, and no allowance for a dishwasher or a full size refrigerator because neither was standard when it was drawn.

Opening it up, once we know what the wall is doing

Taking out the wall between the kitchen and the next room is the usual request. Whether that is straightforward depends on whether it is carrying anything, which we establish before drawing a plan that assumes it can go.
