Door Installation
A door that sticks in August and rattles in January was almost certainly hung out of square. Interior or exterior, the frame and the opening matter more than the door.
What door work involves
The opening gets checked for square and plumb before anything is ordered. Old units come out, the frame is set true, and the door is hung and adjusted so it closes on its own weight without being pushed.
Exterior doors get flashed and sealed against water, which is the part that decides whether the frame is still sound in ten winters.
- Interior, exterior, patio and closet doors
- Openings checked for square before ordering
- Frames set plumb and shimmed properly
- Exterior openings flashed and weather sealed
- Hardware fitted and adjusted, trim finished
Older houses are rarely square
A house that has settled has openings that are not rectangles any more. A standard slab dropped into one of those will bind at the top or gap at the bottom. Measuring the actual opening is the whole job.
Where doors meet the kitchen
A door that swings into the fridge, or into somebody standing at the range, is a layout problem rather than a door problem. If the kitchen is being redesigned anyway, that is the moment to fix the swing.
