Kitchens from the postwar decades

The good news about a house from that period is that it is square. Walls are plumb, openings are true, and stock or semi custom cabinetry fits without extensive scribing, which makes the budget go further.

The problem is the plan. Small separate rooms, a kitchen closed off from everywhere else, and no allowance for a dishwasher or a full size refrigerator because neither was standard when it was drawn.

Opening up, within reason

Taking out the wall between the kitchen and the next room is the usual request, and often the right one. Whether it is straightforward depends on whether that wall is carrying anything, which we establish before drawing a plan around removing it.
